Mesquite, Texas – Police officer whose identity was not revealed by the authorities was shot and killed outside grocery store in Mesquite Friday afternoon, multiple news outlets reported.
According to the police report, officers were dispatched in the 1500 block of S. Belt Line Road following a 911 disturbance call just before 2 p.m. When they arrived at the scene at the parking lot of Albertsons, they found the officer suffering gunshot wounds.
Both the officer and the suspect got shot in the incident and they were both alive when first responders arrived at the scene. They were rushed to nearest hospital in critical condition where the officer was later pronounced dead.
The local police didn’t release many details about the incident, but confirmed that the officer was a 21-year veteran.
Luckily, no one else was injured in the shooting taking into consideration the fact that it happened in a very busy area, outside grocery store. There have been numerous witnesses at the scene when the shooting took place.
Police have not yet shared what led up to that disturbance call that ended with a veteran officer killed.
“This was a senseless act of violence that ripped a loving father and husband from his family,” Mesquite Police Chief David Gill said. “He was a 21-year veteran of the Mesquite Police Department. A good man, a good friend, a good officer. Please keep his family and our family in your prayers.”
More details about the incident are expected during the weekend.
