Fort Worth encourages neighbors to come together for National Night Out on October 6 to build safer communities
Fort Worth, Texas – The City of Fort Worth is inviting residents to come together with their neighbors for National Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 6, encouraging communities across the city to spend time together while building stronger relationships with local law enforcement.
National Night Out is an annual event held across the country to promote safer neighborhoods by encouraging people to get outside, meet those who live nearby, and connect with police officers in a friendly setting. The campaign focuses on strengthening trust between residents and law enforcement while creating communities where neighbors know and support one another.
More than 500 cities across Texas are expected to take part in this year’s event, joining thousands of communities nationwide.
Simple gatherings can make a big difference
The event has grown significantly since it first began in August 1984. During its first year, approximately 2.5 million people from 400 communities in 23 states participated. Today, National Night Out has expanded to include nearly 38 million neighbors in 17,000 communities, making it one of the largest community-building campaigns in the country.
The Fort Worth Police Department said organizing a neighborhood gathering does not have to be expensive or difficult. Instead, residents are encouraged to keep events simple while sharing responsibilities with others on their block.
Officials suggest emailing or personally delivering invitations to every household in the neighborhood and even asking children to help distribute them. A front-yard dessert potluck is another recommended idea, with guests bringing lawn chairs and a favorite dessert to share.
Residents are also encouraged to turn on their porch lights after dinner and spend time walking through the neighborhood. The evening offers an opportunity to introduce yourself to new neighbors, exchange contact information, and strengthen relationships with the people who live nearby.
City leaders believe these small efforts can help create stronger neighborhoods by encouraging communication, trust, and cooperation among residents.
Neighborhood groups interested in taking part are encouraged to register their National Night Out events with the city. Those who need assistance or have questions about the registration process can contact the crime prevention specialist assigned to their Fort Worth Police Department division.
By participating in National Night Out, residents can help build stronger community connections while supporting partnerships between neighborhoods and local law enforcement, all with the shared goal of creating safer and more welcoming places to live.
