Dallas, TX – The suspect who killed Dallas teenager in 2019 was sentenced to life in prison.

According to multiple reports, Datrail Clayton was found guilty for shooting to death then 13-year-old Malik Tyler during a shootout outside a Bruton Road convenience store in 2019.

The incident report from 2019 indicate that the victim was going home from school with a couple of friends who stopped at the store to buy some snacks.

As soon as they arrived there, they heard gunfire and started running. Tyler was shot in the back.

On Friday, it took the jury about an hour to reach a guilty verdict.

During the sentencing phase of the trial, jurors heard testimony from the 24-year-old convicted killer’s family and friends.

“I’m very sorry for what happened to that young boy,” said Barbara Ann Williams, the woman who helped raise Clayton. “He acted out of instinct out of what came after him.”

According to the defense attorney, his client didn’t intend to shoot the young boy and he was acting in self-defense.

In addition to his prison sentence, he is also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine.
