Bike Bus in District 3 gains traction as families embrace group rides to school

Fort Worth, Texas – On Friday, May 9, the City of Fort Worth rolled out a two-wheeled celebration in honor of National Bike to School Day, drawing in students, parents, and community members for a morning centered on pedal power. The event, hosted at Fort Worth Country Day, was more than just a fun ride—it was a call to embrace healthier habits, safer streets, and stronger communities.
Organized as part of a nationwide initiative, National Bike to School Day encourages families to skip the car ride and instead hop on a bike, transforming the daily commute into an opportunity for exercise, learning, and connection. For many students, it’s their first taste of independence and responsibility on the road, guided by lessons in bike safety and route awareness.
Fort Worth’s Transportation & Public Works Department was out in full force, joining volunteers to provide helmets, safety tips, and engaging activities to keep the energy high and the message clear—biking is not only safe but also fun and sustainable. City staff also highlighted current infrastructure projects aimed at improving bike accessibility and safety across neighborhoods.
One standout feature of this year’s celebration was the continued success of the “Bike Bus” in Council District 3. This growing initiative has turned into a weekly event where groups of students and their families ride to school together along planned routes. Led by parents and guardians, the Bike Bus has become a symbol of community spirit, emphasizing the value of shared responsibility and active lifestyles.
Each week, more families join the ride, building momentum behind the movement to make Fort Worth more bike-friendly. The sense of camaraderie is tangible—not only are kids getting to school energized and engaged, but parents are also connecting in ways that the traditional drop-off line never allowed.
City leaders say they’re committed to supporting the Bike Bus and expanding safe cycling options across the region. As the movement gains ground, Fort Worth is seeing firsthand how a simple shift in the school commute can bring people together and inspire change.
