Drug Take Back initiative aims to prevent accidental overdoses, curb prescription drug misuse, and protect Arlington’s local water supply from contamination

Arlington, Texas – On Saturday, April 26, 2025, the Arlington Police Department, in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will host a Spring Drug Take Back event. This initiative is part of the National Drug Take Back Day, designed to encourage residents to safely dispose of expired or unused medications. The event, set to run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will provide a secure and anonymous way for community members to prevent accidental drug overdoses and environmental contamination.

The Drug Take Back event is a crucial community safety and health initiative. By disposing of medications properly, residents help reduce the risk of prescription drug misuse and accidental poisoning. This is particularly vital in homes with children or elderly individuals, where the risk of consuming expired or unintended medication is higher.

Moreover, the event supports Arlington Water Utilities’ efforts to safeguard the local water supply. Flushing medications down the toilet or disposing of them in household trash can lead to water pollution. The substances can seep into groundwater, affecting both wildlife and human health. Thus, proper disposal through designated take-back programs is encouraged.

Residents can bring their medications to any of the four designated collection sites throughout Arlington. These sites are conveniently located to ensure accessibility for all community members:

  • Walgreens at 4400 W. Green Oaks Blvd.
  • Ott Cribbs Public Safety Center at 620 W. Division St.
  • Dr. Theron L. Bowman South Police Service Center at 1030 SW Green Oaks Blvd.
  • Medical City Arlington at 3301 Matlock Road.

The collection sites will accept various forms of medications, including controlled, non-controlled, and over-the-counter medications for both humans and pets. All solid dosage pharmaceutical products and liquids in consumer containers are welcome. However, participants are asked to ensure that liquid products remain sealed in their original containers. Additionally, single-use auto-injectors, like EpiPens, are also accepted.

It is important to note that certain items cannot be accepted at the drop-off locations. These include intravenous solutions, injectables, syringes, and any medical equipment. Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine, as well as pressurized cartridges like inhalers, will not be accepted.

Participants are encouraged to bring their medications in their original packaging, although it is not necessary to remove labels or repackage them. All collected medications will be incinerated following the event, ensuring that privacy is maintained and substances are disposed of responsibly.

This Drug Take Back event not only helps keep homes safe and supports public health but also aligns with broader environmental protection efforts. The Arlington Police Department and its partners invite all residents to take part in this important initiative, contributing to a safer and healthier community.
