Texas aligns with World Autism Awareness Day as Governor Abbott highlights the need for greater understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity statewide

Austin, Texas – In an effort to increase understanding and promote inclusivity for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Governor Greg Abbott has proclaimed April 2025 as Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month in Texas. This initiative aligns with World Autism Awareness Day, underscoring a statewide commitment to recognizing and supporting the diverse needs of people with autism.

Autism, commonly referred to as ASD, is a developmental disorder evident from early childhood. It is characterized by varying degrees of difficulty in social interaction, communication, and behavior. Governor Abbott’s proclamation emphasizes the importance of embracing neurodiversity and the unique contributions of individuals with autism to the community.

During his announcement, Governor Abbott highlighted the importance of building an inclusive society that values the talents and abilities of all its members, including those with disabilities.

“We must also foster a supportive environment where each individual across the autism spectrum can thrive,” Abbott stated.

He shared the spotlight with Jeremiah Kimmel, a student with autism who accompanied the governor during his State of the State Address, symbolizing the inclusive spirit the initiative aims to promote.

Autism is reportedly the fastest growing developmental disorder in the United States, affecting one in every 36 children. Recognizing autism early and fostering acceptance are crucial steps that can improve various aspects of life for individuals with the condition, including employment opportunities, educational outcomes, and access to necessary services.

In support of this important cause, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is set to host the 2025 Texas Autism Conference from April 14-17. This virtual event aims to provide resources, education, and support for families, educators, and healthcare providers to better assist individuals with autism.

Furthermore, the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities continues to advocate for changes in policies and programs that benefit people with disabilities. The committee works tirelessly to ensure that individuals with disabilities have the chance to lead lives filled with independence, productivity, and self-determination. It supports a network of local committees, issues awards to raise awareness, and promotes compliance with disability-related laws.

With initiatives like Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month, Texas aims to lead by example in creating a more accommodating and understanding environment for all its residents, making the state a beacon of hope and inclusivity.
