Music Friendly Texas workshop set for April 3 in Garland as city eyes official certification and expanded support for musicians and creative professionals

Garland, Texas – In a move to bolster the local music scene and encourage economic development, Governor Greg Abbott has announced a new initiative aimed at designating Garland as a Music Friendly Texas Community. This exciting development comes as part of a collaboration between the Texas Music Office (TMO) and Garland Cultural Arts, who are set to host an engaging workshop on April 3, both in-person and virtually.
Governor Abbott expressed his enthusiasm for the program, highlighting the vibrant music culture in Texas and the significant economic benefits it brings.
“Music is alive and well deep in the heart of Texas,” said Governor Abbott. “I thank the Texas Music Office for helping communities across our great state develop creative partnerships and create new jobs. With support from the Texas Music Office, the Texas music industry accounts for 196,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs and generates over $31.7 billion in annual economic activity statewide. Working alongside local leaders like those in Garland, we will ensure Texas communities have the tools needed to succeed.”
The upcoming workshop in Garland will serve as a critical step for the city in achieving the Music Friendly Texas Community designation. This title is not merely symbolic; it signals to music industry professionals that a community is fully committed to fostering music industry growth. Gini Mascorro, TMO’s Community Relations and Outreach Specialist, will lead the workshop. She will outline the benefits of the Music Friendly certification and address any questions from attendees.
Since its inception in 2016, the Music Friendly Texas program has been a trailblazer in the nation for supporting local music economies. Participation in this program provides communities access to a network that promotes music industry development. Garland aims to join over 70 other Texas cities that have already been certified, marking a significant milestone in its cultural and economic ambitions.
The event is open to musicians, venue operators, and the general public, offering a unique opportunity for direct engagement and feedback. It will take place at the Plaza Theatre in Garland, ensuring that local stakeholders can participate easily. For those unable to attend in person, an online option via a provided link will ensure broad accessibility.
