Texas Governor Greg Abbott announces the closure of the Operation Lone Star jail booking facility in Jim Hogg County, citing a significant reduction in illegal border crossings thanks to Trump admin policies

Austin, Texas – In an announcement, Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed the planned closure of the Operation Lone Star jail booking facility in Jim Hogg County. This move comes as a direct result of President Donald Trump’s stringent border security measures, which have significantly reduced illegal border crossings to record lows.
Governor Abbott praised President Trump for his decisive actions, which he credited for the decreased need for such facilities.
“Thanks to President Trump, illegal border crossings are at all-time record lows and, unlike under President Joe Biden, the Trump Administration is quickly deporting illegal immigrants from our country,” said Governor Abbott. “As a result, there is no longer a need for Texas to maintain the jail booking facility in Jim Hogg County. Texas will continue to assist the Trump Administration in arresting, detaining, and deporting illegal immigrants.”

The Operation Lone Star facility was initially opened in 2022 as part of Texas’ efforts to manage border-related offenses. It was specifically designed to process illegal immigrants arrested for crimes in the surrounding areas. However, with the sharp decline in such incidents, the facility has seen a significant drop in its usage.
Texas has already started to phase out operations at the facility and has set April as the official closure date. In addition to closing the facility, Governor Abbott mentioned that Texas has offered the use of the facility to the Trump Administration to support their ongoing border security operations.
This decision is seen as a part of broader efforts to manage resources effectively while maintaining strict border control. Texas officials have reiterated their commitment to supporting federal efforts to enforce immigration laws and ensure the security of the border. Governor Abbott emphasized that the state would continue to assist in arresting, detaining, and deporting illegal immigrants as part of its collaboration with federal authorities.
The closure of the Jim Hogg County facility reflects a significant shift in the landscape of border security and immigration enforcement, underscored by a federal-state partnership aimed at addressing the challenges at the U.S. southern border. As these developments unfold, they mark a notable chapter in the ongoing narrative of America’s border policy and enforcement strategy.
