Thousands of Tarrant County residents will get free cancer screenings in a project worth $9 million
Dallas, Texas – The number of cancer cases has been on the rise since the start of the pandemic and starting soon, thousands of Tarrant County residents will have the chance to get free cancer screenings.
Cancer screenings are vital for some categories of people because early cancer detection can make a huge difference in the overall treatment.
Until now, thousands of Tarrant County residents haven’t had access to cancer screenings. but that is going to change soon after Tarrant County commissioners awarded $9 million to the Moncrief Cancer Institute.
According to the project, thousands of residents can make appointment for cancer screening in the mobile screening unit operated by the Moncrief Cancer Institute.
The money will allow the institute to expand screening services to 3,000 more under-served residents in the county.
Although the number of cancer cases has been on the rise since the start of the pandemic, the number of screenings went down.
“So what we’re doing is, is we’re using these funds to say number one, yes, you need to get screened. Yes, it’s safe. And we have funds to be able to screen you if for some reason you’re not able to afford the screening yourselves or don’t have regular access to the health care system,” said Director of Moncrief Cancer Institute, Dr. Keith Argenbright.
The free screenings for the local residents will be available in the next three years and they will be provided with free breast, cervical, colorectal, lung and prostate cancer screenings at Moncrief’s 18-wheeler mobile screening clinic.
