New Dallas police chief could be named within days

Dallas, Texas – The process of finding a new Dallas chief of police is moving more quickly than it did three years ago. City Manager T.C. Broadnax said Monday that he will likely announce the hiring of a new chief next week.

There are seven finalists who will be interviewed today by individual panels of community stakeholders. That number could be whittled down a bit before final interviews are conducted Thursday. Broadnax, who has sole authority in the final selection, told the Dallas City Council’s Public Safety Committee he’ll take the weekend to think it all over before announcing his decision next week.

The candidates include four with close ties to the DPD including current assistant police chief Avery Moore, deputy chief Reuben Ramirez, former deputy chief Albert Martinez and Maj. Malik Aziz. The other finalists are Irving Police Chief Jeff Spivey, recently retired San Jose, California police chief Eddie Garcia and RaShall Brackney, the police chief in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The search to replace outgoing chief U. Renee Hall has been underway for 83 days. Hall was hired three years ago after a national search that took more than 100 days.
