Texas Gov. Abbott’s visit to St. Timothy Christian Academy showcases his support for school choice, with a focus on helping families of children with learning differences access the right educational opportunities

Plano, Texas – During a recent visit to St. Timothy Christian Academy (STCA) in Plano, Texas, Governor Greg Abbott emphasized the critical need for school choice legislation, which he argued would benefit Texas families, especially those with special needs children. The visit highlighted his administration’s commitment to enhancing educational options across the state.
Governor Abbott’s tour of STCA provided him with an opportunity to interact directly with students who have learning differences, as well as their parents and educators. His presence underscored the importance he places on educational policies that cater to diverse learning requirements.
“The job of the state is to empower parents,” said Governor Abbott. “Schools like St. Timothy provide parents with an alternative education pathway where each individual student’s needs are met, whether they have special needs or just need to be in a different learning environment. Passing school choice in the state of Texas will empower generations of parents to be able to choose the education pathway that truly is best for their child.”
The governor shared his personal connection to overcoming challenges, reflecting on how he did not let the accident that left him wheelchair-bound deter his personal and professional aspirations. This message resonated with the students at St. Timothy, reinforcing the belief that they too can surpass any hurdles they face.
STCA, which serves students in grades K-12 with various learning differences, has become a model for what Governor Abbott sees as the future of education in Texas—a system that honors parental choice and addresses the unique needs of every student. During the visit, Lee Phegley, President of the STCA Board of Directors, joined Governor Abbott in advocating for legislative action that supports school choice.
In his speech, Governor Abbott acknowledged the progress made in the Texas legislature, noting that the Texas House of Representatives was poised to pass House Bill 3, a measure supportive of school choice. This bill aligns with a similar bill already passed by the Texas Senate, Senate Bill 2. The governor expressed gratitude towards the Texas legislators for their dedication to Texas families and emphasized that the proposed school choice program would position Texas as a leader in educational innovation and flexibility.
By pushing for a universal school choice program, Governor Abbott pledged to ensure that Texas would lead the nation in educational outcomes. His administration is dedicated to creating an educational environment where parents can choose the best educational pathways for their children, thereby fostering a more inclusive and adaptive educational landscape.
Governor Abbott’s visit to St. Timothy Christian Academy not only highlighted the potential benefits of school choice but also brought attention to the special considerations needed for students with learning differences. His commitment to education reform in Texas aims to empower parents and ensure that every student has access to a learning environment that best suits their needs.
